Using a PlayStation in the FRITZ! home network

You can easily connect your PlayStation to the home network of the FRITZ!Repeater using a network cable or Wi-Fi, regardless of whether it is a PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 3. The PlayStation can then access the internet and connect to online games or access movie or music services on the internet.

The configuration instructions in this guide apply to PlayStation 5 with system software 20.02-2.25.00.02-00.00.00.0.1. The options and paths may be different with other versions. Refer to Sony for further information on how to set up the PlayStation, for example see the PlayStation support.

Requirements / Restrictions

  • The FRITZ!Repeater must be configured as a router for internet access via a fiber optic or cable modem.

Note:If the FRITZ!Repeater is used as a Mesh Repeater or in IP client mode, neither a DHCP server nor firewall is enabled in the FRITZ!Repeater. In this case, contact the manufacturer of the router.

Note:All instructions on configuration and settings given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Repeater.

1 Preparations

Enabling the FRITZ!Repeater's DHCP server

In the factory settings, the FRITZ!Repeater automatically assigns the correct IP settings to all devices via DHCP. If you disabled the FRITZ!Repeater's DHCP server, re-enable it:

  1. Click "Home Network" in the user interface of the FRITZ!Repeater.
  2. Click "Network" in the "Home Network" menu.
  3. Click on the "Network Settings" tab.
  4. Click "Additional Settings" in the section "LAN Settings" to display all of the settings.
  5. Click the "IPv4 Settings" button.
  6. Enable the DHCP server and define the range from which the FRITZ!Repeater assigns IP addresses.

Note:The FRITZ!Repeater has the IP address 192.168.178.1 (subnet mask 255.255.255.0) and assigns IP addresses from xxx.20 to xxx.200 in the factory settings.

  7. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

Preparing the FRITZ!Repeater for WPS

The FRITZ!Repeater is already prepared for WPS in the factory settings. If you changed the FRITZ!Repeater's Wi-Fi settings, configure the following settings:

  1. Click "Wi-Fi" in the user interface of the FRITZ!Repeater.
  2. Click "Security" in the "Wi-Fi" ("Wireless") menu.
  3. Click on the "WPS Quick Connection" tab.
  4. Enable the option "Push-button method enabled".
  5. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

2 Connecting the PlayStation to the home network

Use either Wi-Fi or a network cable to connect the PlayStation to the home network:

Connecting the PlayStation via Wi-Fi

Make sure that no network cable is connected to the PlayStation.

  1. Click "Settings in the PlayStation's menu.
  2. In the "Settings" menu, select "Network" and then "Settings".
  3. Enable the option "Connect to the Internet".
  4. Select "Set Up Internet Connection".
  5. Click "Set Up Using WPS button" under the list of networks that were found.
  6. Push and hold down the Connect button on the FRITZ!Repeater for about 1 second until the Connect LED flashes.
    • Now the Wi-Fi connection is configured and established.

Connecting the PlayStation using a network cable

  1. Use a network cable to connect the PlayStation to the home network.
  2. Click "Settings in the PlayStation's menu.
  3. In the "Settings" menu, select "Network" and then "Settings".
  4. Enable the option "Connect to the Internet".
  5. Select "Set Up Internet Connection" and then "Set Up Wired LAN".
  6. Enter a name for the connection and click "Connect".
    • Now the PlayStation checks the network environment and the internet settings are updated.

3 Setting up port sharing for online games

By default, the FRITZ!Repeater's firewall protects all of the devices in the home network from incoming connections and unwanted data from the internet. However, this can cause problems with some online games (for example FIFA) because they must be accessible to other players from the internet.

If the PlayStation shows "Type 2" as the NAT type under "Settings > Network > View Connection Status", the FRITZ!Repeater and PlayStation are already correctly configured.

If the PlayStation shows "Type 3" as the NAT type, some of the services or data required by the PlayStation are being blocked; this is usually because port sharing was not configured. In this case, adjust the settings of the FRITZ!Repeater:

Important:To be fully accessible from the internet, the FRITZ!Repeater requires a public IPv4 address.

Setting up automatic port sharing

Set up the FRITZ!Repeater for automatic port sharing so that the PlayStation itself can open all of the ports it requires in the FRITZ!Repeater:

  1. Click "Home Network" in the user interface of the FRITZ!Repeater.
  2. Click "Network" in the "Home Network" menu.
  3. Click on the "Network Connections" tab.
  4. Click the (Edit) button next to the device you want to configure.
  5. Click on the "Home Network" tab.
  6. Enable the option "Permit independent port sharing for this device".
  7. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

Setting up static port sharing

If you still cannot connect to online games or the connection drops, configure the required port sharing settings manually:

  1. Set up static port sharing in the FRITZ!Repeater for the ports and IP protocols used by PlayStation Network (PSN) (source: PlayStation user manual):
    • TCP ports: 80, 443, 3478-3480
    • UDP ports: 3478-3479
  2. If the online game uses other ports in addition to the ones required for PlayStation Network, configure port sharings for those ports in the FRITZ!Repeater. For example, FIFA 23, the football simulation game, requires the following additional port sharings (source: Port Forward):
    • TCP ports: 1935, 3659, 10000-10099, 42127
    • UDP ports: 3074, 3659, 6000

Note:With just a few clicks in the internet you can find lists of ports used by other games such as Battlefield, Call of Duty, Starcraft & Co., for example at portforward.com.

Now the FRITZ!Repeater is fully configured for incoming and outgoing internet connections. If you still experience problems when playing individual online games or the PlayStation still displays "Type 3" as the NAT type, the FRITZ!Repeater may not have received a public IPv4 address from your internet service provider.
