Setting up the FRITZ!Box for use with a fibre optic connection

You want to set up the FRITZ!Box fibre on a fibre optic connection? ✔ It's easy with this guide.

Thanks to its integrated fibre optic modem, you can use your FRITZ!Box directly on the fibre optic connection (fibre to the Home, FTTH), saving space and power. Simply connect the FRITZ!Box to the fibre optic socket and enter your account information in the FRITZ!Box user interface.

Refer to Setting up the FRITZ!Box: Guides for different providers for links to our provider-specific guides. If your internet service provider is not listed there, proceed as described in this guide.

Note:All instructions on configuration and settings given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Box.

1 Unlocking your FRITZ!Box

If you purchased your FRITZ!Box from a retailer, your internet service provider may have to unlock it first:

  1. Contact the customer service of your internet service provider and have them unlock the FRITZ!Box for your fibre optic connection, if necessary. Depending on the provider, you can either call their customer service or use an activation portal to activate it.
    • With some providers, the FRITZ!Box's 'modem ID' given on the type label is required to unlock it.

2 Inserting the SFP module into the FRITZ!Box

The FRITZ!Box is available in several different product variants, each of which is delivered with different components. If no SFP plug-in module was inserted in your FRITZ!Box, perform the following steps:

  1. Insert the SFP module that is suitable for your fibre optic connection into the fibre slot of the FRITZ!Box:
    1. If you have an AON fibre optic connection, insert the SFP module 'FRITZ!SFP AON' into the fibre slot of the FRITZ!Box.
    2. If you have a GPON fibre optic connection, insert the SFP module 'FRITZ!SFP GPON' into the fibre slot of the FRITZ!Box.
    3. If you have an XGS-PON fibre optic connection, insert the SFP module 'FRITZ!SFP XGS-PON' into the fibre slot of the FRITZ!Box.

Important:If you do not know what kind of fibre optic connection you have, test all of the SFP modules supplied with the FRITZ!Box. The Power/Fiber LED on the FRITZ!Box remains lit as soon as the FRITZ!Box is connected to the fibre optic connection using the correct SFP module.

3 Connecting the FRITZ!Box to your fibre optic connection

  1. Remove the dust protection caps from the fibre optic cable, the SFP module in the FRITZ!Box, and from the fibre optic socket (OTO).
  2. Connect the fibre optic cable to the SFP module in the FRITZ!Box and to the fibre optic socket. Do not bend the fibre optic cable and do not hold the ends of the cable in front of your eyes.

Note:You can find information on selecting a suitable fibre optic cable in our guide Which fibre optic cable do I need?
